Planning ahead for attending court: cycling championships expected to impact on roads

Aug 01, 2023

The UCI World Cycling Championships will take place across Scotland from Thursday 3 August to Sunday 13 August. The first event of its kind – billed as the biggest cycling event ever staged – will feature the world’s greatest cyclists, who will compete at the highest level.

The Championships are expected to have some impact on the road and transport network as they take place around the country, from Dumfries and Galloway and Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders, past city landmarks across the central belt, up to Fort William in the Highlands.

If you are attending court during this period please allow for any additional travel time that may be required and plan ahead.

Key dates listed:

  • On Wednesday 2 August at 5pm, the opening ceremony takes place at Glasgow’s George Square.
  • On Thursday 3, Friday 4 and Saturday 5 August there will be Glasgow road closures and some impact likely on the A82.
  • On Friday 4 August, the Gran Fondo road races in Perthshire will involve the closure of a key junction on the A9 as well as a full closure of the A85 between Perth and Methven.
  • On Sunday 6 August there will be closures in and around Edinburgh towards Stirling, most notably on the M9 at Junctions 1A (Newbridge) and 7 (Kinnaird House Interchange) to allow the Men’s elite race to pass over the Queensferry Crossing. There will also be movements from Fort William to Peebles (A82, M8, A720) and closures in and around Glasgow city centre.
  • On Monday 7 August, an event will take place on the A92 in Dundee and Angus. This may also affect traffic on the A90.
  • On Saturday 12 August, there will be Glasgow road race closures, activity on the A82 to Balloch and on the A75, Dumfries, and M74.
  • Sunday 13 August, the final day, sees Glasgow road race closures and activity on A82 to Balloch.
