High Court jury trial capacity

High Court jury trial capacity in Scotland has now returned to pre-COVID levels.

This week, the number of High Court jury trial courts that can run in Scotland has returned to pre-COVID levels.

With the use of remote jury centres, court capacity has reached 16 trial courts, the level available before physical distancing restrictions were put in place.

Remote jury centres, funded by the Scottish Government, are now up and running at Odeon cinema complexes at Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh, where 5 juries can sit, and Braehead in Renfrewshire, where 11 juries can sit.

The remote jury centres were introduced following a recommendation from a cross-justice working group chaired by the Lord Justice Clerk, Lady Dorrian.

Building on the success of the High Court, a new cross-justice working group, chaired by Sheriff Principal Turnbull, is taking forward the practicalities of rolling out remote jury centres to sheriff court business. Read more
