Start a claim

Before you start:

You should try to settle the dispute.
This could mean writing to the person or company you have the dispute with and trying to agree a settlement. You can also use Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

You should read the Simple Procedure Rules and guidance.

To continue you will need:

  • An email address that you have access to and can check.
  • The information you need to complete the claim form (see Simple Procedure Rules and guidance).
  • Any supporting documents that you want to upload (you can upload up to 5 files at a time, which must be either a PDF document, PNG image, JPG or JPEG image).
  • Your credit or debit card to pay the court fee; or
  • A completed fee exemption form and evidence that you (the claimant) are entitled to claim this (for example if you receive certain state benefits.  See guidance for more information). You can upload your completed form when submitting your claim form.
  • Your completed lay representative form if you are acting as a lay representative.
