Office of Sheriff or Summary Sheriff vacancies

Feb 26, 2020
The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the Office of Sheriff or Summary Sheriff.

For the avoidance of doubt, candidates may only apply  for one or other office.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to justice in Scotland. There are currently 8 Sheriff and 2 Summary Sheriff vacancies:

Glasgow and Strathkelvin

  • 2 x Sheriff posts based at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Grampian, Highland and Islands

  • 1 x Sheriff post based at Inverness Sheriff Court. Floating role.
  • 0.5 FTE x Sheriff post based at Stornoway / Lochmaddy. Strict residency requirement.

Lothian and Borders

  • 2 x Sheriff posts based at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway

  • 1 x Summary Sheriff based at Ayr Sheriff Court. Floating role.

Tayside, Central and Fife

  • 1 x Sheriff post based at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.
  • 1 x Sheriff post based at Falkirk Sheriff Court. Floating role.
  • 1 x Summary Sheriff post based at Dundee Sheriff Court. Floating role.

During the current appointment round further vacancies may arise.  Applicants will be advised of any further vacancies and asked if they would wish to be considered for these.

Following the conclusion of this appointment round, the Board may hold open a list of appointable candidates for six months.  If further posts become available during that period, those vacancies may be offered to candidates on this list.  Please note that being on the list does not guarantee a recommendation to Scottish Ministers.

We encourage diversity and particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in the judiciary.  The principles of fair and open competition will apply and recommendation for appointment will be made solely on merit.

Further information can be found within the Guidance Note and Role Profile on the https://www.judicialappointments.scot/vacancies .

Applications must be submitted by noon on Tuesday 17 March 2020.
