The General Department

The General Department deals with actions other than actions to the administrative jurisdiction of the Court which are dealt with by the Petition Department. Actions are started by summons. The purpose of a summons is to set out the basis on which the pursuer seeks to enforce a legal right against another person.

Given the volume of this type of action, the General Department is split into four sections, each run by an Administrative Officer . Each section's case load depends on the pursuer's (person raising the action) surname. See table on preceding page.

The main duties of this officer are to attend the public counter, to check documents lodged for procedural accuracy, to similarly check motions enrolled and to advise the Court customers e.g. solicitors and party litigants, of Court procedures.

The Assistant Clerk of Session receives support from the Administrative Officer .

The main duties of the Assistant Clerk of Session is monitoring all processes received back from Court and noting interlocutors through the Court record book, technical and procedural problems, other duties include answering any oral/written communication and checking summonses to be signetted (i.e. authority granted by the Court for service on the defender).
