On 1 April 2010 The Judiciary and Courts (Scotland) Act 2008 established the Scottish Court Service as a new, independent statutory body. Previously the organisation was an Executive Agency of the Scottish Government accountable to the Scottish Ministers.
The Act also appointed the Lord President as head of the Scottish judiciary. In this role the Lord President has responsibility for the efficient disposal of business throughout the courts and for welfare, guidance and training of the judiciary and for ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place for the investigation and determination of complaints about judicial conduct. In these functions he is supported by The Judicial Office for Scotland.
