In response to recent newspaper articles which have speculated that 19 courts could close across Scotland, the Scottish Court Service has responded emphasising that there are no proposals to close sheriff courts in Scotland.

Along with other public bodies the Scottish Court Service is planning for a future in which public sector spending is likely to see significant reduction.

A discussion paper had been put before the Strategic Board to illustrate the possible impact of different financial scenarios, regardless of whether they were considered achievable or desirable. This internal working document was leaked to and reported by the media.

Once the budget settlement for future years is known the Scottish Court Service Strategic Board will require to agree any future business model in conjunction with the judiciary and other justice colleagues.
