The Conditions and Treatment of Prisoners Under Escort Report

On Thursday 6 September, HM Inspectorate of Prisons published a report on "The Conditions and Treatment of Prisoners Under Escort".

Following publication of the report, Eleanor Emberson, Chief Executive said: "We welcome the report and the opportunity for the agencies to work with HMIP on implementing the recommendations. This will be an ongoing process working together with SPS and Reliance and other agencies as required."

"In the time since the inspection took place many of the issues identified have been tackled as part of our custody improvement programme. In the last three years we have spent £3million on custody improvements alone."

This is the first time such an inspection has taken place and focuses on three main areas including the delivery of prisoners to court, the management of prisoners while at court and the return of prisoners to prison custody from court.

The report concludes that the overwhelming majority of escorts are managed without incident or difficulty of any kind however there are a number of issues for all the agencies concerned to consider and you can read details of the responses to the recommendations made here.
