On the 2nd of June 2008 District Courts in Grampian, Highland and Islands were disestablished and Justice of the Peace Courts were established.

Implementing the unification is one of the biggest changes that SCS has undergone and the process in Grampian Highland & Islands was a really important step on the road to Summary Justice Reform. One of the key aspects of the change was the staffing. Significant preparation went into ensuring that both staff who transferred or recruited were in post and trained to allow the SCS to undertake operations on the date of unification.
