Update for the Glasgow & Strathkelvin Sheriffdom

Update

West Unification Schedule gets go-ahead. by David Lynn

The proposed schedule for unification of courts in the Sheriffdoms of Glasgow and Strathkelvin, South Strathclyde Dumfries and Galloway and North Strathclyde has now been approved in principle by the Court Unification and Fines Project Board and the first steps to secure unification in the West have now begun. Glasgow and Strathkelvin will be the first to fully unify with a target date of December 2008, followed by South Strathclyde and North Strathclyde with completion dates set for June and October 2009 respectively.

The project will build on the valuable lessons learned in both Lothian and Borders and Grampian Highland and Islands projects, although unique operational issues within each Sheriffdom and associated District Courts in the West do exist. For example, the District Court in Glasgow is the only District Court in Scotland which currently operates with Stipendiary Magistrates as well as Justices of the Peace. All of this will be taken into account in the initial scoping analysis work.
