In the 1800’s the administration of justice in Falkirk took place in various locations such as the Red Lion Inn on the High Street, Wilsons Building opposite the Steeple and the Temperance Hotel which was in Bank Street. A permanent Sheriff Court House was built in Hope Street in 1868. The courthouse also contained prison facilities, prisoners having previously been temporarily confined in 2 jail rooms within the Steeple. By 1980, the rise of court business meant that the old building which had served as a courthouse for over 120 years had become seriously overcrowded. A new site in Camelon was obtained and the present courthouse opened in 1990.
