Doors Open Day events

Sep 03, 2015

Sixteen Scottish courts are taking part in this year’s September Doors Open Days which will include mock trials and competitions.

Other events will feature court tours including visits to the cells and prison vans and a display of maces and robes.

The mock trials give visitors a taste of what happens in our courtrooms every day and the roles played by judges, lawyers, clerks and court officers.

Parliament House, Edinburgh

The High Court in Edinburgh will produce a re-enactment of the famous Burke and Hare trial. In Parliament House, there will also be a presentation by Judicial Office staff and information available on both the Scottish Civil Justice Council and the new Scottish Sentencing Council to be established in October. The popular Parliament Hall exhibition, which has run throughout the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, will also be open.

The courts taking part are: Ayr, Dundee, Edinburgh (both Sheriff and supreme courts), Forfar, Glasgow, (both Sheriff and High) Greenock, Hamilton, Inverness, Kilmarnock, Kirkcaldy, Lerwick, Paisley, Perth and Stirling.

The Scotland-wide event, organised by the Scottish Civic Trust, enables people to visit hundreds of buildings normally closed to the public.
